INFO ON A-Z VOLUNTEER PLACEMENTS

We provide specialist programmes for primary school teachers and nurses and we also have ‘General Skills’ placements for which no specific qualifications are required. Our placements are flexible and balanced with a good variety of work and enough free time for you to rest. Anyone who likes working in a team and is enthusiastic, motivated and adaptable will fit right in.

The dates and placement breakdowns are as follows: -

1st Placement – 2nd July- 23rd July 2010

8 nurses, 25 primary school teachers and 5 individuals with general skills

2nd Placement – 23rd July- 14th August 2010

8 nurses, 25 primary school teachers and 5 individuals with general skills

The placements are filled on a first come first served basis, subject to the suitability of a candidate. A place is guaranteed once an individual has completed an application form, an informal phone interview and then paid for his/her plane ticket in full.

If you would like the opportunity to volunteer in Uganda, please complete an application form and return it to Miriam Lewis, A-Z Children’s Charity, The Digital Depot, Roe Lane, Thomas Street, Dublin 8.

Please note that you must be at least 20 years old to volunteer with A-Z Children’s Charity.

What’s involved?

Before departure, all volunteers are required to raise a minimum of €2000 which goes directly to the charity. You will be responsible for booking and paying for your own flight, which costs approximately €1150. Vaccinations and anti-malaria drugs cost around €200 in total.

In preparation for the trip, volunteers receive a comprehensive induction and orientation programme that starts well before departure and continues when you arrive in Uganda. You will be provided with secure accommodation plus three meals a day and A-Z’s dedicated Volunteer Coordinators will always be on hand for friendly advice and support.

A-Z Children’s charity subsidises your trip in Uganda. We provide airport transfers, secure accommodation including a bed and full board, a mosquito net, water, electricity etc. All this costs you just €100 for the full duration of your stay. The cost of living in Uganda is low, so your trip should be very cheap once you have arrived in the country.

Uganda is a visually stunning country - Winston Churchill called it “The Pearl of Africa” – so you can use your free time to explore its beauty and natural wonders. There are options including going on safari, trekking to see the mountain gorillas or white-water rafting on the River Nile at the weekends. Please note that such excursions are run by private tour operators and will incur an additional (€100-€500).
